How do you calculate the purity/price of gold?

like 10k, 14k, 18k, from 24k and = to today's gold price.

  1. See if this helps: A Karat is 1/24 pure gold by weight. Thus, 24K is considered pure gold. If 24K is pure gold, then 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58% gold etc. Given an approx spot gold price of $1000/oz., scrap value of One (1) gram of gold is as follows: 10K $12.67 per gram. 14K $17.49 per gram 18K $22.64 per gram 24K $30.93 per gram Nice 10K gold rings on ebay are going for $12-15 per gram, so this sorta proves out the table above. I'm sure you'd pay significantly more money if you went to a commercial jewelry store, or a ring dealer like Jostens, etc, probably twice more. So, first weigh the item, then compute. If a 18K ring weighs 10 grams, (at $23/gram from the table above), the range would be $230-$260 on ebay to probably at least twice that much from a dealer or jewelry store. Check the stamping inside to make sure it does not say "GP" or "RGP" after the "K" because that means it's gold plated and NOT the real thing.
