How much is a 1914 Indian $10 gold coin in G+/VG condition?
This is a 1oz .900 pure gold coin. A jeweler is going to quote me a price on Monday and I want to know what is a good buy price. Is a coin in this condition worth more than the gold bullion that is in it? If not, how would I calculate how much the coin is worth based strictly on gold bullion (current gold spot price is $914)?

- Its worth some money !!!! !
- There is not an ounce of gold in a $10 Indian of 1914. There is .48375 oz of pure gold so that is less than a 1/2 ounce. A gold coin in such a low grade as good/very good is considered a non collectible, unless the coin is extremely rare and the 1914 is not. The lowest collectible grade for most gold coins is very fine. The coin is worth only the gold value. Remember dealers sell for a percentage above spot and pay a percentage below spot. I am sorry but the coin is considered junk gold. I would pass on the deal for the coin is such a low grade and it is being sold by a jeweler. I have found over the years one goes to a coin dealer who deals only in coins or paper money not other things.
- At $914/oz, the gold in this coin would sell for roughly $440. A coin dealer would likely charge a buyer around $600 (or more if he thought he could get it) for a 1914 Eagle in VF condition; since this one's not as good, the price would be less, but still more than $440. If you're buying this as jewelry and you like the design or have some non-numismatic reason for buying it, keep those numbers in mind. Of course, if you're looking to make an addition to (or to start) a gold coin collection, you'd be wise to keep looking.
