  1. First, 5% moves around a multi-decade high is a rather big dose of volitility. What is it that you want and why? Second, the theory of gold investing suggests that it should be a store of value, implying movement only if inflation is fluctuating. Short answer might be that inflation isn't moving. Third, six months...are you kidding me? Look at the 20 year chart. A properly adjusted investor time frame suggests the move is made. Be conservative and get out. Finally, the BIG SECRET of investing is spelled out in black and white: No one knows. Many people will give you their best guess. But no one knows.
  2. Maybe the central banks, which own 30% of the gold available in the world, do not like its price to move too much. The trend is slightly up since several years, but under control. A sign of underlying strength is that its price staid rather steady during the subprime storm.
  3. It's been moving a lot this year already. Maybe it's "tired" of moving.
  4. Hard to say, but that's exactly the good about gold- stability! If you want fluctuation, invest in silver. But they're all going down the past week.
  5. fears of a deflationary spiral... .. no conviction that the Fed will cut rates agressively to stop the housing bubble from deflating causing inflation so it's not a good hedge there.... fears that the world economy may slow so global demand may slow... potential towards steady global growth with contained inflation wouldn't indicate a break out or break down of gold prices.... would simply stagnate and decide which direction next based on economic news... which seems to be what the stock market in general will do as well. arguements for global growth are logical... arguements for deflationary spiral are logical at this point... no way to determine until economic numbers are released showing what is happening... i think flatline for mkt and gold for a few weeks until news.
