How to start a gold/silver/rare coin investment firm? What is this secret investment in the gold market? I have recently read about an investment in the gold market which increases dramatically when the supply of US dollars increases. Reputedly it proved so successful to many wealthy families that it was outlawed in 1933 by the then President Franklin D Roosevelt. I do know it's not strictly an investment in the bullion itself and when I first read it had by doubts but confirmation of it being genuine have come from valid financial critics. Why do people think gold is a good investment? I remember back in the 70's gold was going for over $800 an ounce. Now after almost 30 years it's about $950 an ounce. How can anyone say gold is a good long term investment?? I do have about 6 ounces of gold coins but I have it just because I like the look and feel of real gold.

That's $150 increase over the past 30 years. I'm not going to do the math but that is a very poor earnings over 30 years. So why do people still think gold is a good investment?
Why do some people say Gold/commodities is a safer investment than the US dollar? There is no military protecting the value of the Gold but the US dollar has the largest military protecting it. and if some alchemist finds a way to easily make a lot of gold it suddenly loses all it's value. Same for all other metals and commodities. In a way the US dollar even if you don't agree with some of the politics is the safe investment because the full power of the US military protects its market.

Is Gold really a good long term investment? I am absolutly new to investing or even toying with the idea of saving for my old age. I don't really understand about 401k and IRAs too awful well but I do have a military thrifty savings plan. Anyway, I keep hearing ads about buying Gold and Plat and how it's a great idea. Investment in gold? My friend came to know about this gold investment in JB/Malaysia. He has to invest S$8000 to buy a piece of 916 gold bar weighing 100g. The period of investment is 6mths, each month his interest is a piece of 916 gold leaf. He can trade in the gold leaf for money however he will get 2% lesser. At the end of 6mths, he can keep the gold bar. However, if at that time, the price of gold is higher, he can choose to sell to outsider at higher price. Besides investment, what is driving the demand side for Gold? AU, Kruggerands, etc. It has tripled over 15 years, doubling in the just the past few.
